TERM DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION(S)
The interviewer asks the respondent for his/her date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format. If the respondent does not know his/her date of birth the interviewer asks an alternative question to determine his/her age. NOTE: The current age of the respondent can be calculated, given the date of the interview. The question may be asked of a proxy. Proxies are others in the household who can answer on behalf of the index person (e.g., parent, spouse) if the index person is too young, incapacitated, deceased, or cannot be located.

TERM DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION(S)
The interviewer asks the respondent if he or she considers himself or herself to be Hispanic or Latino and, if so, asks an additional question about his or her specific Hispanic origin is asked. One or more Hispanic origin categories may be selected. If the respondent answers "yes" to the first question, then the interviewer should proceed to the next question, which includes the categories of Hispanic origin or ancestry. For the follow-up question, the interviewer should hand the respondent a card with the list of categories and read the categories, if necessary. Ethnicity must be asked prior to race. Some Hispanic respondents are confused by the race question if it is asked first.

PART DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION(S)
  Part: Sex
In LOINC, sex refers to the biological sex of an organism, which is most commonly determined based on anatomy and physiology or genetic (chromosome) analysis. Our definition is based on the World Health Organization's definition of sex and gender: sex (male, female) refers to biological and physiological characteristics, and gender (masculine, feminine) refers to socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes. TERM DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION(S)
Knee height is measured from below the lateral malleolus of the fibula to the heel. This measure is used for individuals who are >=60 years of age or are unable to stand or have spinal deformities.Under usual field conditions, for reliability, the Anthropometrics Working Group suggests that the measurements be taken in duplicate. A third measurement should be taken if the first two measurements differ by >1.0 cm (1/4 inch). If it is necessary to take a third measurement, the two closest measurements are averaged. Should the third measurement fall equally between the first two measurements, all three should be averaged.

TERM DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION(S)
Recumbent length is measured from the top of the participant's head to his or her heels while the participant is lying recumbent. This measure is taken among young individuals. Under usual field conditions, for reliability, the Anthropometrics Working Group suggests that the measurements be taken in duplicate.

Question asking the study subject his or her height. NOTE: Self-reported height values are considered to be less accurate. Self-reported height is subject to error and is used when measured height cannot be obtained. This gives another way to monitor trends in Body Mass Index (BMI). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studies use self-reported height. However, it is recommended to use this interview protocol only as a last resort or a fallback when protocols 1-3 are not possible.

TERM DEFINITION/DESCRIPTION(S)
Weight is measured using a digital floor scale. The instrument should be calibrated daily using standardized weights, and a log of calibration results should be maintained. For reliability, the measurements are taken in duplicate. A third measurement should be taken if the first two measurements differ by >200 grams or 0.25 pounds. If it is necessary to take a third measurement, the two closest measurements are averaged. Should the third measurement fall equally between the first two measurements, all three should be averaged. Measured weight is recommended, and self-reported weight should only be recorded as a last resort.* Please indicate how the weight was collected (i.e., measured vs. self-reported). In instances where both self-reported and measured weight are collected, collect the self-reported weight first before measuring weight. *NOTE: Self-reported weight values are considered to be less accurate. Self-reported weight is subject to error and is used when measured weight cannot be obtained.

ASSOCIATED OBSERVATIONS

Definition/Description: This panel contains all of the "Special circumstances" LOINC codes that are used to report the specific context during which a particular measurement was taken, where that context may affect the measurement value. Circumstances that can affect measurement of certain variables include when the patient is asleep, in pain, crying, febrile, or during a period of apnea. This panel is attached to the generic LOINC code for each measurement so that the circumstance under which the measurement was taken can be reported along with the primary result.
