Version 2.77

Descriptions

Immunoelectrophoresis (IES) is a method that allows the identification of proteins. A mixture of proteins is added to an agarose gel and an electric current is applied. The various proteins will migrate according to their size and electrical charge. An antibody will then be added along the side of the gel. If the antibody recognizes a protein in the gel, a precipitation arc will develop that can be visualized by staining. If there is no arc in the gel this means that the antiboby is not specific to any of the proteins in the initial mixture. A technique that combines protein electrophoresis and double immunodiffusion. In this procedure proteins are first separated by gel electrophoresis (usually agarose), then made visible by immunodiffusion of specific antibodies. A distinct elliptical precipitin arc results for each protein detectable by the antisera. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006
