Description
Immune blot (Western Blot), is a rapid and sensitive method used in cellular and molecular biology to identify a specific protein in a complex mixture extracted from cells. Gel electrophoresis separates the polypeptide chains (subunits) in proteins according to their molecular weight. This procedure produces bands, corresponding to various subunits that were present in the extract. The bands are transferred onto a membrane and incubated with a primary and secondary antibody to visualize the target subunits. Detection of a single band usually indicates that the target consists of a single subunit. Multiple bands generally indicate that the target contains two or more subunits. Western Blot is useful for identifying antigens recognized by polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies. PMID: 19066547 PMID: 24741558 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
