Version 2.77

Description

Antibody avidity is a measure of the strength at which a multi-valent antibody binds to a multi-valent antigen. As time from a primary infections (exposure) increases the avidity tends to increase because the antibodies produced early in an infection tend to be single valent and those produced weeks to months later are increasingly multi-valent ,that is, they bind simultaneously to an increasing number of antigen sites. This phenomenon is used to distinguish primary (recent) infections from past exposures and is much more sensitive than IgM antibodies used for the same purpose. As of 2010 avidity is only applicable to IgG antibodies and LOINC codes measuring IgG avidity exist for CMV, Rubella, Toxoplasma gondii and West Nile virus.
