Description
The coronary artery segmentation model published in 1975 by the American Heart Association (AHA) divides the coronary arteries into 15 segments for the purposes of evaluating and treating coronary artery disease. The diseased area(s) (also called "lesion") can be described in terms of the specific coronary segments where each lesion starts and ends. This model is still used as of 2015, with modifications by different disciplines.
The 15 AHA segments are defined as follows: 1) proximal right coronary artery; 2) mid right coronary artery; 3) distal right coronary artery; 4) posterior descending branch of right coronary artery; 5) left main coronary artery; 6) proximal left anterior descending artery; 7) mid left anterior descending artery; 8) distal left anterior descending artery; 9) first diagonal branch; 10) second diagonal branch; 11) proximal left circumflex artery; 12) obtuse marginal artery; 13) mid distal left circumflex; 14) posterolateral branch of left circumflex artery; and 15) posterior descending branch of left circumflex artery. PMID: 1116248 The 16 segment model is a modified version of the 15-segment AHA model and adds the intermediate branch artery (ramus intermedius), which originates from the left main coronary artery between the left anterior descending and left circumflex in cases of trifurcation, as segment 16. PMID: 21232704 An individual patient may not have the exact coronary segments described by this model and may have missing and/or additional segments, which can be evaluated by procedures such as angiography. Depending on the context, the AHA segments may be further subdivided in order to provide finer anatomic granularity.
