Version 2.77

Description

Fonofos is a light yellow liquid with a sulfurous odor. It is an organothiophosphorus cholinesterase inhibitor used as an insecticide mainly on corn but also on sugar cane, peanuts, tobacco, turf, and some vegetable crops. Fonofos is effective in combating aphids, corn borer, corn rootworm, corn wireworm, cutworms, white grubs and some maggots. It is extremely toxic to aquatic wildlife, bees, birds, freshwater fish and saltwater organisms. There is no evidence that fonofos bioaccumulates in either the environment or in animal tissue. Fonofos is toxic to humans if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin or eyes. Initial symptoms of exposure to fonofos include blurred vision, headache, dizziness, sweating, muscle twitching, tearing, pain, blurring, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Extreme exposure can lead to respiratory failure and death. Fonofos is not classified as a carcinogen.[PubChem:13676][http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/dienochlor-glyphosate/fonofos-ext.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
