Version 2.77

Description

Methyl parathion is a white, crystalline solid organophosphate insecticide and acaricide. It is used to control boll weevils and biting and sucking insects of agricultural crops. Methyl parathion inhibits the enzymatic activity of cholinesterase which is required for the healthy functioning of the nervous system in humans, animals, and insects. It is extremely toxic if inhaled or ingested and moderately toxic when absorbed by the skin. Early symptoms of exposure to methyl parathion include bloody or runny nose, cough, chest discomfort, difficult or short breath, and wheezing due to constriction or excess fluid in the bronchial tubes. After extreme exposure, symptoms can include involuntary defecation or urination, psychosis, irregular heartbeat, unconsciousness, convulsions, coma, and death due to respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. Methyl parathion is a possible teratogen but not believed to be a carcinogen. It is rapidly metabolized by plants and animals and is assumed not to persist or bioaccumulate in the environment.[http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/haloxyfop-methylparathion/methyl-parathion-ext.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
