Version 2.77

Description

Leukocyte esterase (LE) is an enzyme contained in WBCs. In fluids that are usually cell "free", detection of this enzyme indicates the presence of a significant number of WBCs which can signal infection or inflammation. In urine, this test is used to detect white blood cells and other abnormalities associated with infections. White blood cells in the urine usually indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI). The LE test detects esterase, an enzyme released by white blood cells. Testing for LE is a routine part of the urine dip stick, and helps to diagnose urinary tract infections. Positive test results are clinically significant. The LE test is also used to screen for gonorrhea and for amniotic fluid infections. The combination of the LE test with the urinary nitrite test provides an excellent tool for the presence of a UTI. A urine sample that tests positive for both nitrite and leukocyte esterase should be cultured for pathogenic bacteria.
