Version 2.77

Term Description

The Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale (BSDS) was designed to identify the milder variants of bipolar disorder, such as bipolar II and bipolar not otherwise specified (NOS). The patient-reported assessment consists of two parts: 1) a paragraph describing 19 symptoms of bipolar disorder in which the subject puts a check mark next to the sentences that describes them; and 2) a multiple choice question that asks the subject to indicate how well the paragraph describes them overall. Total score for the BSDS can range from 0 to 25; a score above 13 indicates a "moderate probability" of bipolar disorder and is considered a positive screen for bipolar disorder. PMID: 15708426
