Term Description

Cryoglobulins are proteins in the blood that are soluble at 37 degrees Celsius but precipitate at lower temperatures. There are three classes of cryoglobulins that are differentiated by what type of protein precipitates. In type 1, the proteins involved are monoclonal immunoglobulins, usually IgM. Type 2 proteins include a mixture of monoclonal IgM and polyclonal IgG proteins. Type 3 may include polyclonal IgM and IgG cryoglobulins. In some cases, the proteins congeal rather than precipitate when observed in the laboratory. An additional process of hypotonically diluting the serum may be required in these instances in order to observe precipitation. PMID: 3787096

Serum cryoglobulins are immunoglobulins that, in vitro, precipitate at temperatures below 37°C and redissolve on rewarming.Cryoglobulins can be transient and without clinical implications or they can be a marker of significant disease. Monoclonal cryoglobulins, which are IgG, IgM, or IgA, or monoclonal free light chains, are usually associated with haematological disorders. Mixed cryoglobulins, which contain polyclonal immunoglobulins with or without a monoclonal component, are found in many infectious and systemic disorders.
