The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) measures the distance that a patient can quickly walk on a flat, hard surface in a period of 6 minutes (the 6MWD). It was as developed in 1963 by Balke to evaluate functional capacity. PMID: 12091180 The object of this test is for the individual to walk as far as possible in 6 minutes. This measure is a part of the multi-component BODE index that correlates with survival.
