Term Description

Position: Infant faces the examiner in a seated position from which he is lowered to semi-sidelying while the examiner cradles the side of the head, keeping the head aligned with the trunk. The legs are kept flexed at the hip and knees. In this reclining (recamier) position, the humerus of the lower arm should be perpendicular to the support surface as the infant leans on his forearm. The other arm should fall forward. The infant should be placed close to the edge so that if s/he pushes to sitting, the lower legs can hang off the table. The examiner waits until she feels the lateral muscles of the neck become active. Omit on children with no upright head control (score = 0).
Procedure: From the above position, the infant is gently lowered to a full sidelying position with the head resting on the support surface. The examiner places one hand on the infant's pelvis and gently applies pressure to initiate lateral head lifting. The hand which was previously under the infant's head can provide a point of support (not assistance) at the crook of the elbow of the top arm which the infant can use to pull the head and trunk upward.
